ANZEC Weekend Gathering — Christchurch, New Zealand 10–12 April 2026
Join fellow members of the Australia–New Zealand Explorers Club (ANZEC) for a refined and collegial weekend gathering in Christchurch—an opportunity to reconnect, share stories from the field, and explore the unique cultural and scientific landscape of Te Waipounamu, the South Island of New Zealand.
Set against the backdrop of one of New Zealand’s most dynamic cities, this curated weekend blends informal conversation, member-led talks, and light adventure, offering space for reflection, inspiration, and community.
Tentative Programme Overview
Friday, 10 April
Explorers arrive in Christchurch by late afternoon. The evening begins with informal drinks in the central city, providing a relaxed setting to reconnect and welcome new faces. The group will then retire to a shared Airbnb accommodation, dependent on size of crowd (~4 spots for accomodation, otherwise feel free to book a nearby hotel, airBnB, or other rental).
Saturday, 11 April
The core day of the gathering features informal club discussions, a shared lunch, and a series of member talks throughout the day. Each member will have the opportunity to speak, offering insight into recent work, expeditions, or noteworthy adventures. The day concludes with a cocktail hour followed by dinner in town.
Sunday, 12 April
The final morning will include a light adventure or cultural engagement, to be confirmed. Options under consideration include engagement with mana whenua (indigenous explorers, subject to availability and interest), a visit to the International Antarctic Centre, or other tramping excursion. Departures are planned for around midday.
This ANZEC weekend is designed to be thoughtful, engaging, and collegial — balancing intellectual exchange with the spirit of exploration that defines our community. We look forward to welcoming members to Christchurch for a memorable and meaningful gathering.
Please note: Expenses are on your own, although do let us know if you want to book in at the shared AirBnB (~$500/room) ASAP. There are many lovely places to book accomodation in the CBD, which is about a ~20-ish minute uber ride away from the airport.
